Medicine companies that work around the world are now helping to clear the freight bottlenecks. The pharmaceutical industry is one of the world’s largest, taking roughly 30 percent of international freight. Most of the work is domestic in the U.S. The pharmaceutical industry is responsible for about 80 percent of global pharmaceuticals, contributing $3.2 trillion in revenue annually, according to the Pharmaceutical Wholesaler and Suppliers Association. The percentage of international shipments that arrive on time or early can be highly variable, with the FDA saying that for pharmaceutical s, “the average global consignment arrival time is 18 days, with a mean of 4.7 days.” From January 2015 to January 2016, the agency reports that most pharmaceuticals took on average 72 hours, on average, for shipment from the U.S. to the EU. That’s according to documents from the U.S. Agency for International Trade.
